What is OHSA?

  • OHS is a systematic approach to ensuring the well-being of workers by identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks in the workplace. It encompasses a range of measures aimed at preventing injuries, illnesses and fatalities associated with work related activities. OHS is not merely a set of regulations but a comprehensive strategy that involves risk assessment, Hazard identification, control measures and ongoing monitoring. It’s overreaching goal is to foster a culture where safety is a priority, creating a work environment that safeguards the physical, mental, and social health of employees.

About OHSA

  • Occupational Health and Safety Act came into effect on 01 January 1994. The primary purpose for the Act is to protect people other than those who are employed from risks to their health and safety resulting from or related to their activities at work.

  • To create an advisory council for occupational health and safety; and to address matters related thereto.

  • To ensure people's health and safety both while they are working and when using equipment and machinery.

Why is OHS important in a company?

  • OHS is vital in the business for several reasons. Firstly, it is a moral imperative to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals who contribute to the organisation. Beyond morality it is legal requirement in most jurisdictions and failure to comply with OHS regulations can result in legal consequences and financial penalties. The following are some ways that OHS impacts businesses:

  1. Legal Compliance – We are obligated to comply with local, national, and international Health and Safety regulations. Failure to comply can result in legal consequences, including fines lawsuits, and potential shutdowns.

  2. Employee Well-being – Prioritising OHS shows a commitment to the well-being of employees. A safe and healthy workplace/ promotes employee satisfaction, reduces absenteeism, and can enhance overall morale and productivity.

  3. Risk Management – OHS practices help identify and mitigate potential hazards in the workplace. This proactive approach minimizes the likelihood of accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses.

  4. Productivity and Efficiency – Healthy employees are generally more productive, leading to increased efficiency and positive impact on company’s bottom line.

  5. Reputation and Brand Image – Companies with strong OHS practices build a positive image. Consumers and investors are increasingly conscious of corporate responsibility, and a commitment to employee safety can enhance a company's brand image and market position.

  6. Cost Savings – Implementing effective OHS measures can result in cost savings in a long run. This includes reduced medical expenses, lower insurance premiums, and decreased costs associated with worker compensation claims.

  7. Regulatory Relationships – Complying with OHS creates positive relationship with regulatory bodies. This can lead to smoother business operations and potentially favourable treatment from government agencies.

  8. Employee engagement – OHS initiatives can involve employees in safety programs, creating a sense of ownership and responsibility. Engaged employees are more likely to contribute to a positive safety culture within the organization.

  9. Global standards – Many multinational corporations operate in countries with varying OHS standards. Adhering to high global standards not only ensures compliance but also facilitates international business operations.

  10. Long - Term Sustainability – Companies that prioritise OHS are more likely to achieve sustainability. A healthy and safe workforce contributes to the overall resilience and stability of the organisation.
