WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF POPIA?
The purpose of POPIA is to:
Protect Personal Information: Ensures that individuals and businesses handle personal information safely and responsibly.
Establish Minimum Requirements: Set standards for legally processing personal information.
Balance Rights: Balance individuals' or businesses' right to privacy with access to information.
Promote Transparency: Mandates clear communication about using and storing personal information.
Create Accountability: Holds individuals and businesses accountable for their information handling practices.
Regulate Cross-Border Information Transfers: Controls how personal information is shared internationally.
Harmonise Standards: Aligns South African information protection laws with international standards.
Establish the Information Regulator: A government body responsible for enforcing compliance with POPIA.
