WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF POPIA?


The purpose of POPIA is to:


  • Protect Personal Information: Ensures that individuals and businesses handle personal information safely and responsibly.

  • Establish Minimum Requirements: Set standards for legally processing personal information.

  • Balance Rights: Balance individuals' or businesses' right to privacy with access to information.

  • Promote Transparency: Mandates clear communication about using and storing personal information.

  • Create Accountability: Holds individuals and businesses accountable for their information handling practices.

  • Regulate Cross-Border Information Transfers: Controls how personal information is shared internationally.

  • Harmonise Standards: Aligns South African information protection laws with international standards.

  • Establish the Information Regulator: A government body responsible for enforcing compliance with POPIA.
