by Signa Group's Information Management Department

KEY DEFINITIONS OF POPIA (Cont.)

The key definitions of POPIA include:

  • Biometrics: Unique physical, physiological, or behavioural characteristics that can be used for automated recognition of an individual, such as fingerprints, retina and iris patterns, voice or DNA samples.

  • De-identify: The process of removing or obscuring any personally identifiable information from data sets, so that the people whom the data describe remain anonymous.

  • Enforcement Notice: Formal notification issued by the Information Regulator directing a responsible party to either take specific measures or to refrain from taking certain actions, to rectify a breach or prevent further non-compliance with the Act.

  • Re-identify: The process of restoring or adding identifiable elements to previously de-identified information, thereby making it possible once again to recognise an individual from that information.
